The Jul-Aug 2012 issue of Writer's Digest calls this issue the Rule-Breaker's Issue and published four articles that supports that:
1. The Reluctant Risk-Taker's Guide to Filling the Creative Well
2. Go Your Own Way
3. Pulling the Rug Out
4. Rewriting the Rules of Marketing
You may find the articles helpful or at least interesting. I did. I like the magazine, but I find that I don't have time to devote to it, thereby missing a lot of good advice. Maybe if I spent the time on each issue to thoroughly read through it, my writing would improve by osmosis. I don't believe in the tooth fairy, so I'll keep plugging away, going my own way, and see what other rules I can break.
I used to read this cover to cover but finally stopped taking it after years when I realized I was barely paying attention to most of the material in it. I still pick up a copy once in a while and enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteThey have some fine articles and provide good advice. I usually end up reading one or two pieces before setting it aside and never get back to it.
DeleteI like Seth Godin's blog. He cuts straight to the chase with good advice every day, and it takes about a minute of reading, plus however much time you care to think about what he's said. In general, he recommends that you focus on what you do best, do it better than anybody else, and ignore everybody's advice.
ReplyDeleteI will check it out. I like advice short and to the point.
DeleteAt one time I read it cover to cover. Still think it is great but seems like grandkids take most of my time (and I love it that way)
ReplyDeleteThe grandkids deserve all the time you can give 'em.
