Go West, Young Man

This month's header sketch is Horace Greeley who received fame for saying "Go West, young man, go West and grow up with the country" as he urged people to make the trek west. Greeley was a politician, editor, founder of the New York Tribune, a Liberal Republican, among other things. He ran for President of the U.S. but died before the votes were counted. He lost, anyway, poor fellow. Two of his correspondents on the Tribune were Karl Marx and Fred Engels, the bad guys of Communism and Socialism. He also launched the New Yorker journal and a Whig weekly the Log Cabin.

Mr. Greeley was born in Amherst, New Hampshire, on Feb 3. 1811 and died in Pleasantville, New York, in 1871 on Nov 29.

(Info from Wikipedia whee you may go to find a more lengthy short bio with photos of Greeley.)

To everyone: Have a happy Fourth of July!

  1. Wow, a liberal Republican, don't hear that anymore. He was an interesting man. He urged the young to go west but never did himself.

    3. A liberal Republican in those days would have been an ardent supporter of Lincoln. And later, someone like Teddy Roosevelt, anti-trust, pro-reform, opposed to favoritism and cronyism in government. And Roosevelt DID go West for a while, ranching in Dakota Territory. BTW I give you credit as an advocate of the First Amendment for even mentioning Marx and Engels on Independence Day.

    4. Thanks, Ron. I thought it was interesting that they both worked for an American newspaper for a while. It seems their philosophy is running rampant in educational and some political circles, but their actual names are hardly ever mentioned. A subterfuge and a political catastrophe for young students who have been brainwashed for years and is being reflected in today's society.

    1. The two sides are espousing what's good for them, but not for the country, and they don't listen to each other anyway, only hear enough to criticize the other side..
